Officials have agreed to annex eight parcels of land throughout the village, but delayed annexing a ninth until residents in that area can find an attorney to represent them.

Officials wished to annex the land in order to “round out” the village’s borders and to have jurisdiction over certain areas where the village already is maintaining streets adjacent to the parcels, said Mike Friesen, assistant to the village administrator.

The parcels, all located on the eastern portion of the village, contain fewer than 50 homes. The eight annexed parcels contain only a “handful” of those homes, Friesen said.

But many residents in the ninth parcel, located north of Klasen Road and east of Illinois Highway 31, don’t want their land annexed, saying, in part, that it will bring higher taxes and possibly result in costly zoning hearings should they ever need to rebuild their homes.

Village officials delayed annexing the ninth parcel when they discovered that the attorney they retained for a separate issue was representing the township and homeowners of the ninth parcel.
