The lack of rain over the last month and the increased use of water by residents could force Joliet officials to curtail lawn watering as early as Tuesday.
Dennis Duffield, Joliet’s public works director, told the City Council Monday that current water demand is exceeding supply.
Joliet wells lost 50 percent of their storage over the weekend.
Under the city code, City Manager John Mezera can issue an executive order to restrict such uses of water.
“We’re down eight-tenths of a foot since 7 a.m. Monday,” Duffield told the council. “Today we still feel comfortable, but we’re prepared to do something soon.”
Currently one of the city’s 11 deep wells is out of service. That well is scheduled to go back in operation Friday. However, another well is scheduled to go out of service Monday.
In addition, works crews are repairing any leaks as soon as they are located, Duffield said.
