Craig Grebeck may be headed for the disabled list after tests on his still-puffy left ankle were less than encouraging.
Grebeck, who left a game at Oakland on May 20 after sustaining what at the time was diagnosed as a “moderate” ankle sprain, had been expected back within a few days.
“We did a stress X-ray of him, and that looked a little suspicious,” trainer Herm Schneider said. That led to a magnetic resonance imaging, he said. “And that MRI looked very suspicious.”
Schneider said the club is awaiting analysis of the MRI by a specialist before making the next move.
“We have a feeling it’s not real bad,” he said, “but there’s a chance he may need to be put to rest for a little while.”
Ventura sits: Robin Ventura left Friday night’s game after one at-bat with a recurrence of muscle spasms in his lower back, something that hits him from time to time. Schneider said there’s a chance he could play Saturday. “It’s Robin’s decision,” Schneider said. Bob Zupcic subbed.
Guillen plays: Ozzie Guillen (back spasms), who took batting practice but was held out of the starting lineup, entered the game as a defensive replacement in the ninth and expects to be back in the starting lineup Saturday.
Nice May: The Sox (14-7) are assured their first winning May since 1990. . . . They’re batting .310 and have outscored their May opponents 153-87. . . . Frank Thomas’ May (21 games): .472, 10 homers, 26 RBIs, 26 walks, just nine strikeouts.
This is better: Sox designated hitters (primarily Julio Franco) have 51 RBIs. Last year’s Sox DHs had 52 at the All-Star break.
