Hit the Highway (Chrysalis) (STAR)(STAR)(STAR)
Craig and Charlie Reid look like bookish Scotsmen with nary a trace of soul, but they can wail. “Hit the Highway,” the brothers’ third album, is textbook pop spirituality: stuff that won’t offend purists and is a clear notch above the smarmy Michael Boltons of the world. They opened up a dusty closet of gospel music with their reworking of Sullivan Pugh’s ’50s tune “I Want to Be a Christian.” Otis Redding’s “These Arms of Mine” similarly is given a reverent cover. The rest of the tracks were penned by the brothers. On the standout “Your Childhood” Craig Reid speaks of the ephemeral quality of life as he sings, “By the time you’re 15 you’re never wrong/But then you turn around and it’s all gone/Your childhood.” A song like “The More I Believe” might sound preachy, but the saving grace of the disc is an utter lack of Bible-thumping.
