A timely anonymous call helped authorities thwart an attempt by three inmates to break out of a cell at the Kane County Adult Correction Center, the Kane County Sheriff’s Office said Tuesday.
A shift sergeant received a call about 6 p.m. Sunday from someone who apparently did not like one of the inmates involved and preferred to see him remain in custody, said Assistant Security Commander Sgt. Rick McKiness.
Corrections officers conducted a search and found three inmates inside one of the cells at a time when they were scheduled to be at a common area, he said.
The inmates, who authorities have declined to identify until charges are filed, had succeeded in cutting out a 6-inch-by-10-inch hole in a glass-and-metal frame window in the second floor cell before being interrupted.
