Turning on the stove or using the phone will cost residents more this year, but it’s all for a good cause, officials contend.
Trustees agreed to raise the current 3 percent utility tax to 5 percent to finance the construction of a new police station. The building, which would replace the badly cramped and outdated police station at 226 N. Cass Ave., will cost about $3 million to build, officials said.
The current 3 percent utility tax brought in about $580,000, and the new tax is expected to reap about $860,000 annually, said village manager Raymond Botch. After the police station is paid for, the village will funnel the utility tax revenues toward other improvement projects.
