Authorities investigating last week’s murder of two men at a pizzeria remained tight-lipped Sunday about how the case was proceeding.
Police Lt. Paul Hendley declined to say whether investigators have any suspects or if arrests were imminent.
Each man was shot in the back of the head early Friday at Maude’s Pizza, a carryout restaurant at 922 Glen Flora Ave. The victims were Cory Gerlach, 28, the pizzeria’s manager, and Perry Austin, 52, a friend who worked at a print shop and lived next door to the eatery.
Behind the police tape, messages of love written from friends and relatives to the slain men covered the door Sunday at Maude’s Pizza. The messages surrounded a letter written to the murderer from Cheryle “Maude” Brown, the owner of the pizzeria and Gerlach’s mother. “You’ve taken my angel and he’s not here,” she concluded. Also taped to the door was an orange orchid.
Police have said that they were investigating a possible connection between the slayings and an armed robbery Wednesday at a Dunkin’ Donuts. They also have said there is no evidence that the slayings are linked to last year’s slaying of seven people at Brown’s Chicken & Pasta in Palatine.
