The baseball comedy “Major League II,” starring Charlie Sheen, hit a home run in its debut, earning $7 million for first place at the weekend box office.

In second place was “D2: The Mighty Ducks” with $6.3 million, followed by “The Paper” in third with $5.6 million, according to figures released Monday.

Except for “Major League II,” debuts did miserably.

With a paltry gross of $1.4 million, “Jimmy Hollywood” finished a weak 14th. The Paramount film stars Joe Pesci as a struggling actor turned vigilante.

New releases “Clifford” and “Thumbelina” opened poorly as well. The news was equally dire for “The House of the Spirits,” the star-studded adaptation of Isabel Allende’s South American novel.

The cast of Meryl Streep, Jeremy Irons and Glenn Close could not save the Miramax film from negative reviews. “The House of the Spirits” made $1.7 million for 11th place.

“Naked Gun 33 1/3: The Final Insult” earned $5.3 million for fourth place and “Schindler’s List” was fifth with $3.8 million.

“Above the Rim” was sixth with $2.7 million, Martin Short’s comedy “Clifford” was seventh with $2.6 million and the animated movie “Thumbelina” was eighth, grossing $2.3 million.

“Four Weddings and a Funeral” collected $2 million for ninth and “Guarding Tess” made $1.8 million for 10th.
