A man accused of keeping a pet alleged to be part dog and part wolf will go on trial May 31 on a charge of violating a McHenry County ordinance, an assistant McHenry County state’s attorney said Monday.

The case will be the second involving Aaron Velazquez and his animal, Kayla. Velazquez says it is a cross between a German shepherd and an Alaskan malamute.

McHenry County Judge James Franz recently ruled Kayla, impounded in February, by state law should be returned because it was not a pure wolf.

A county ordinance bans any cross between wildlife and domestic pet, said Mary Lennon, assistant McHenry County state’s attorney.
