Ed Belfour celebrated being named NHL player of the week by taking a rare night off Monday. He had played in the previous 16 games, and only the day before, coach Darryl Sutter had indicated that the league’s hottest goalie would play Monday.

Actually, “I told Jeff (Hackett) three or four days ago that he’d be playing tonight,” Sutter said.

No way: About that report that the Hawks recently had offered Belfour in a trade with Detroit for scoring machine Steve Yzerman. “Are you blinkin’ nuts?” General Manager Bob Pulford asked when the matter was broached.

Fire-breathers: The Nordiques are making a late drive for the playoffs, and although they still have a long way to go, Sutter wasn’t surprised that they came out breathing fire. “They’re a desperate team,” he said. “It would be more surprising if they didn’t come out hungry.”

No big deal: Michel Goulet’s goal-scoring streak ended at four games. “I’ve had them a lot longer than that,” said Goulet, who has four 50-goal seasons on his resume.
