Wheelchairs have been part of physical education classes recently at Madison Elementary School.
All 540 pupils spent some of their time last week in the school gymnasium trying to manipulate wheelchairs to get a feel for how it is to be physically impaired.
“They think this is a riot and a lot of fun, but they can get out of the chair and go back to class,” said Edward Smith, a physical education teacher.
At Madison, four pupils use wheelchairs.
In one 4th-grade gym class, youngsters tried to play basketball in wheelchairs.
“It felt weird,” said Julie Boll.
“I had fun, but I feel sorry for the kids who have in stay in a wheelchair,” said David Harrison.
