Gosh. Just for something different, let’s see if anything weird happened last week in college basketball.

Oh, yeah. Here’s something. Back on Tuesday, No. 11 Massachusetts won at No. 8 Temple, which is comparable to winning a tax audit. But then, on Sunday, it lost at unranked George Washington.

Ahhh. Here’s another. On Thursday, No. 17 California won at No. 15 UCLA, which is haunted by all those ghosts of titles past. But then, on Saturday, it lost at unranked Southern Cal.

No. 12 Indiana losing by 50 at No. 20 Minnesota? That fits in here, too, especially with the Gophers coming off a 17-point loss at unranked Michigan State. And how about the AP’s top seven teams skating through the week unscathed? That may be the weirdest fact of all.

As for the Scribbler’s opinions: eight of his top nine enjoyed an unbeaten week. The exception was Temple, which lost to Duke as well as UMass. This leads to the conceit that just maybe, finally, after all these weeks, he’s getting the knack.

But, alas. Only one more of these oft-futile exercises remain, and then comes Selection Sunday. Which means the guessing will end. And the finest three weeks in sports will at last be at hand.
