A man was critically stabbed after he answered a knock at the door Saturday morning and became involved in an argument with an acquaintance looking for someone else, police said.

Salvatore A. Samaritano, 28, was listed in critical condition with several stab wounds about his torso at GlenOaks Medical Center, police said.

Samaritano was visiting friends in the 600 block of Dickens Avenue when the front doorbell rang, Police Chief James R. Carroll said. The visitor asked to speak with a resident who was not at home, and Samaritano, who knew the visitor, asked him to leave, police said.

Samaritano and the man then got into a fight in the driveway, and Samaritano was stabbed several times, police said.

Nicholas I. Spero, 19, of 2N164 Pearl in Glen Ellyn, was arrested in Alexian Brothers Hospital in Elk Grove Village where he had gone to receive treatment for wounds from a fight and was charged with attempted murder, police said.
