The city will receive $560,000 in federal money to buy and install 90 ornamental street light fixtures downtown.
“Without this grant, the city would not have been financially able to go forward with this improvement,” said Mayor Richard Dystrup. Lockport will put up $140,000, or 20 percent, of the project’s cost.
City officials said they will tie the new streetlights to the resurfacing of Illinois Highway 171. That project will get under way this spring.
The city’s current streetlights are substandard for glare and illumination. More than a year ago, state transportation officials told Lockport that it would have to remove them. The city was given the choice of replacing them or having no lights at all, said Ann Hintze, executive director of the Lockport Area Development Commission.

The streetlights will be copies of those widely used in Washington, D.C. The same type was used in Lockport on State Street from 1938 to 1958.
