A Chicago developer has proposed building a 400,000-square-foot retail shopping center that would be one of the first commercial development in the city’s planned West Gateway area.

Dalan/Jupiter Inc. unveiled its plans this week for 42 of the 160 acres it is under contract to buy at the northwest corner of Randall Road and Illinois Highway 64.

“We’re primarily focusing on the retail portion of this property right now,” said company President Patrick Daly.

The land is annexed and zoned for commercial development. The remaining 118 acres includes commercial and multifamily residential zoning.

The shopping center would be anchored by Menard’s, a hardware store, and Leewards, an arts and craft store, Daly said.

The company is to appear before the city’s Plan Commission next month with its formal application.
