Eleanor McEvoy

Eleanor McEvoy (Geffen) (STAR)(STAR)(STAR)

Ireland has produced some interesting female singers, ranging from the strident (Sinead O’Connor) to the ethereal (Enya). Philosophically, Eleanor McEvoy is somewhere in between. On her self-titled debut album the singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist impresses as much with her thematic worldview as she does with her prodigious musical abilities and clarion-like vocals. Her themes range from the pain of loss (“Leave Her Now”) to anger (“Promises We Keep”), infatuation (“Finding Myself Lost Again”) and devotion (“For You”). Guaranteed to garner some attention is her ambiguous “Only a Woman’s Heart,” an Irish No. 1 single whose message has angered some feminists. To quote from one of her own songs, this is music “as potent as wine.”
