Here’s a new twist on luncheon meat: Loewy Foods Inc., a Chicago distributor, has introduced Silver Bow Deli-Style Smoked Salmon.

Three versions are available: Smoked salmon chubs, smoked salmon log, and salmon ham. All are made from alder-smoked Alaskan salmon. The flavors are fine, though they lack the delicacy of expensive smoked salmon products. But for $7 to $7.60 a pound compared with smoked salmon at about $25 a pound, it’s hard to quibble.

Perhaps the most intriguing aspect of The Silver Bow products is that they are much lower in fat than most deli meats. About 3 percent of the calories (62 in a 2-ounce serving) are due to fat, according to the manufacturer. Those on a sodium-reduced diet, however, should exercise caution. Like many deli meats, these products offer a lot of sodium, about 600 milligrams per 2-ounce serving.

Look for Silver Bow items in deli departments at Treasure Island, Sunset Foods and The Market Place stores as well as other independent supermarkets.
