Two youths were shot to death Saturday in separate incidents of horseplay with guns that also resulted in charges against three other teens.

Terrell Muse, 14, of 4518 S. Evans Ave., Chicago, died Saturday after he was shot in the chest with a .25 caliber semi-automatic handgun. Two 13-year-old boys were charged with reckless conduct in the shooting.

Nearly two hours later in south suburban Hazel Crest, Dominique Hoskins, 12, of 3000 Greenwood Rd., died after he was shot in the face with a .38 caliber revolver. A 14-year-old friend was charged with involuntary manslaughter in a juvenile delinquency petition.

“Most of these kids that do this are dumb. They think they’re immortal,” said Wenthworth Area Sgt. Marshall Andrews, watch commander of the violent crimes division. “They will never forget that (the shootings).”

In the South Side shooting, the three boys had been playing with a gun for two days before the shooting occurred, Chicago police said. Police do not know where they found the gun, which was unregistered.

Muse was shot at 1:37 p.m. at 4537 S. Champlain Ave., not far from where he lived with his grandmother, Mary Lock.

“They had each fired a round from the gun the day before,” Andrews said. “(Saturday) they pulled the magazine out and were under the impression that without the magazine it would not fire. There was one bullet left in the gun.”

Muse was pronounced dead at 2:06 p.m. at University of Chicago Hospital, according to officials with the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office.

The 14-year-old boy charged in the shooting found the gun in his parents’ bedroom, police said.

Hoskins was shot in the face when the 14-year-old pointed the loaded revolver at him at 3:30 p.m. in the garage of the older boy’s home at 2908 Buttonwood Walk. Both Hoskins, a student at Prairie Hills Junior High School in Markham, and the older boy had been handling the weapon before the shooting, police said.

Hoskins was pronounced dead at 3:52 p.m. at South Suburban Hospital in Hazel Crest.

All three teens were being held at the Cook County Juvenile Detention Center.
