Expect the people of Decorah, Iowa, to be glued to their television sets during the Winter Olympics in Norway. After all, Decorah, population about 8,000, is such a hotbed, so to speak, of Norwegian-American activity that the local McDonald’s has Velkommen (welcome) and Mange takk (thank you) signs and is decorated with those floral paintings Norwegians call rosemaling. The townspeople will be watching the Olympics for sights of the old country as well as of themselves. In October, CBS Sports brought humorist Garrison Keillor, the bard of Lake Wobegon, to town and shot footage there to use intermittently during its Olympics coverage. Decorah’s Vesterheim Norwegian-American Museum helped arrange the filming of local religious and cultural events, but museum archivist Charles Langton said the highlight may be Keillor’s interview with Aaron and Arvid Swenson, identical-twin bachelor farmers from Flom, Minn., whom the museum imported for the occasion.
