Handgun issues took center stage in two communities this week as one town approved an outright ban on the sale of handguns and another passed a resolution urging the state and federal governments to halt the sale of assault weapons.

The Elk Grove Village Board on Tuesday passed an ordinance that not only bans the sale of handguns but also handgun-style air guns, despite objections from some residents.
In Des Plaines, the non-binding resolution on assault weapons also asks for stricter penalties against felons using firearms.
Des Plaines Ald. Nick Chiropolos said the action would “send a message” that gun control advocates were being heard in the city.
The Elk Grove ordinance will take effect in May to give the 26 licensed firearms dealers believed to be doing business from their homes enough time to sell their inventories.
In addition, the ordinance raises the minimum age from 13 to 18 for air-gun purchases and bans the transportation of air guns within reach of passengers in a vehicle.
Residents can still own handguns and air guns, as well as purchase rifles. Manufacturing, wholesale operations, import and sale of antique firearms are allowed.
“We want to prevent individuals from coming to Elk Grove Village, under any pretense, to purchase handguns,” Trustee Paul Rettberg said. “We are relatively crime-free, but we’d like to keep it that way.”
Violation of any of the provisions of the ordinance would carry a fine of $50 to $500.
