A man who was captured after accosting two women in a tavern parking lot turned out to be a convicted kidnapper and rapist, Cook County Sheriff’s Police said Monday.

Witnesses told police the man fired a .22-caliber handgun twice while attempting to force two female motorists to drive him outside Roses on River tavern, 704 N. River Rd., said sheriff’s spokeswoman Penny Mateck.

On Saturday night, the man shot his gun in the air, then forced his way into a car driven by a 32-year-old Schaumburg woman, Mateck said.

The woman fled back into the bar. The assailant again fired his gun into the air and jumped into a car driven by a 26-year-old Northbrook woman.

The second woman pushed the man out of her car, Mateck said. A customer and the tavern’s doorman captured the assailant in a nearby woods.

Mateck identified the suspect as Scott Hildreth, 35, of 456 Touhy Ave., Des Plaines. She said he was released from prison in 1992 after serving six years for kidnapping and criminal sexual assault.

Police charged Hildreth with two counts of vehicular invasion. He was ordered held on $500,000 bond.
