Residents were given a chance to view floor plans and voice opinions last week on a proposed 58,000-square-foot family recreation center that voters will be asked to approve in an advisory referendum March 15.
The $7.6 million Park District center, which would mean a property-tax increase of about $39 a year for the owner of a $100,000 house, would replace the village’s community center and be located on Parkside Circle.
The center at 777 Bartlett Rd., built in 1972 when Streamwood’s population was almost 22,000, is considered too small to accommodate the village’s growing population, which is about 31,200.
The center would have a gymnasium, an aquatics center and a lap pool, a senior center, a teen center, a kitchen, an indoor jogging track, an indoor playground, and six preschool rooms.
But some residents argued that taxes are too high and that the economy is not conducive for such luxuries. Others said that they moved to Streamwood because housing was affordable and that the existing center suits their needs.
