Glenbard North’s wrestlers hope to avoid a recent trend.
In each of the last two years, the team that won the Panthers’ regional tournament lost the ensuing dual meet. Glenbard won the dual meet last year after finishing second in the regional. This year, the Panthers will try to hold off second-place Wheaton-Warrenville South in the dual meet Tuesday night.
“We wanted to have 13 qualify (for sectionals), but we didn’t make it,” said Glenbard North coach Mark Hahn, whose team won their own regional Saturday with 196.5 points. The Panthers advanced 11 wrestlers, three of them champions.
“I thought it would be real close between us, Glenbard West and Wheaton-Warrenville South, but we did a really good job in the first round,” said Hahn. The Panthers held a 35-point advantage on Wheaton-Warrenville and Glenbard West after the opening round.
Public League: Carver advanced nine wrestlers to sectionals and won the Southeast regional, holding off Julian 169 1/2-136 1/2. Carver had four champions among the nine.

T.F. South: Marian Catholic will host Bloom in the dual meet Tuesday after winning the regional. Marian placed nine wrestlers in the sectional and crowned four champions.

Harvard: Harvard easily advanced by sending 12 wrestlers to finals with eight champions. Harvard will meet second-place Wauconda.
“I was really pleased with the overall balance and the fact that we were very consistent today,” said Harvard coach Tim Haak. “Rocky Chapman upset the No. 2-ranked wrestler in the state (Todd Costa of Wauconda). Chuck Blazer (160), Jose Saucedo (171) and Chef Dougherty (189) wrestled very well also.”
GYMNASTICS
Lincoln-Way: For the sixth straight year, Lincoln-Way won its regional and will enter the sectional looking for the elusive state tournament bid.
“For the last five years, we have been one of the favorites at sectional,” said Lincoln-Way coach Donna Jagman. “There were a couple of years in a row where we missed going to state by a 10th of a point. We want to go real bad.”
Lincoln-Way edged Hinsdale South 143.10-138.35. Hinsdale’s Jacey Herman was the all-around champion with a 36.55 total, including a school-record 9.75 on the uneven bars.
SWIMMING
Suburban Catholic: Marmion won for the third year in a row, easily outdistancing Benet for the team title.
Jason Nagel led a parade of multiple winners for Marmion, which set three conference records.
Nagle set a record in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1 minute 2.39 seconds and swam a leg of Marmion’s record-setting 200-medley (1:40.38) and 200-freestyle (1:32.84) relay teams.
“Last year we qualified all three relay teams and seven individuals for the state meet. We would expect a similar showing this year,” Marmion coach Tom Olson said.
SICA North: Tim Erdman swam on four winners as Stagg overpowered Lockport 342-263 at Shepard.
Erdman took titles in the 200 individual medley and 100 backstroke and swam on Stagg’s victorious 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays, as the Chargers won their sixth conference meet in seven years.
Stagg’s 200-freestyle relay time of 1:32.31 set a SICA North record, and Kurt Beckering’s 457.75 in diving set a school record for Stagg.
