If you’re a guy and you want to look sharp for spring, at the very least you’ll need a band-collar shirt and clothes that are eco-friendly.

The shirt is easy to describe-it doesn’t have a collar.

Eco-friendly, however, has several shades of meaning. It has to do with selecting garments that are made of natural fibers-linen, being the most important, with cotton and silk also in the mix.

The color story is also a factor. “Natural” is the buzz word, and that can range from beige to woody brown.

That’s the early forecast from the show of spring menswear staged by the Fashion Association (formerly the Men’s Fashion Association). If men go along with the band collar shirt to the extent the fashion professionals involved believe, the button-down collar could look odd, if not wrong, in some circles.

Clothes from Tommy Hilfiger, Calvin Klein, Donna Karan, as well as Pendelton Woolen Mills, IXPSA 2000, J.C. Penney and many others are clearly enticing men to lighten up when it comes to color and styling.

Not that any of these concepts are new. The band collar has been around, but only now it’s meant to go everywhere from casual to dressy to formal. It’s a look that has a life of its own and doesn’t require a tie to grab attention.
