New Trier knows it is far from winning the Central Suburban South basketball title. But the Trevians (10-8, 5-2) took a step in that direction Friday night with a 64-39 victory over Maine East (11-7, 4-3).
“It was the best game we played all season from start to finish,” said New Trier coach Mel Sheets. “We felt our size inside, if we were patient, could get the good percentage shot inside.”
Seth Derdzinski scored 19 points, Dan Carpenter 18 and Bart Leahy 12 for the Trevians.
“We knew they were small and we knew we could pound them on the boards,” said Carpenter. “We knew that if we would get an early lead, we’d be in control.”
Plainfield 74, Geneva 50: Chris Glenn scored 17 points and Cody Salter 15 as Plainfield (18-2, 10-1) held onto sole possession of first place in the Little Seven.
St. Francis 68, Marmion 53: Ron Kammes scored 19 points and Brian Hughes 17 as St. Francis (11-6, 6-1) held on to first place in the Suburban Catholic.
Lane Tech 73, Sullivan 72: Corey Evans sank both free throws of a one-and-one situation with :09 left to lift Lane Tech to 6-1 in the Red North. Evans finished with 31 points.
Foreman 60, Senn 51: Terrance Stanton scored 18 points and Terrell Alexander added 16 for Foreman in the Red North.
Mather 63, Schurz 48: Erik Bankston’s 15 points paced Mather in the Red North.
Lake Forest 65, Fenton 41: Ben Moss scored 16 points, Edward Cage had 15 and Eric Santa 14 to lead Lake Forest (10-9, 5-5) to the North Suburban Conference victory. Tony Petrovich had 14 points for Fenton (8-11, 4-6).
De Kalb 60, Waubonsie Valley 50: Dan Morrell and Alex Kosoric scored 15 points each, and Greg Sulaver added 14 for De Kalb (12-7, 7-3) in the Upstate Eight.
Glenbrook S. 54, Niles W. 44: Jeff Berman scored 14 points and Chris Jackson and Joe Lambert contributed 11 apiece for Glenbrook South (13-6, 4-3) in the Central Suburban South victory. Bill Chepulis had 15 points for Niles West (4-11, 2-5).
Lyons 49, Hinsdale Central 33: Mike Warkentien scored 15 points and Lyons (16-3, 7-0) outscored Hinsdale Central 22-4 in the third quarter to stay on top of the West Suburban Silver.
Notre Dame 66, Marian Catholic 57: Sean Anderson pumped in 25 points and grabbed 10 rebounds as Notre Dame (13-4, 6-1) won in the ESCC.
Walther Lutheran 88, Luther North 52: Ike McClure scored 19 points and Marc Rodgers added 14 as Walther Lutheran (7-11, 6-5) prevailed in the Private School League.
York 63, Downers Grove North 50: Kit Harley popped in 18 points as York (9-10, 3-4) cruised in the West Suburban Silver.
St. Joseph 55, Holy Cross 50: Rodney Horton pumped in 24 points as St. Joseph (13-6, 7-1) slipped by in the ESCC.

Morton 57, Leyden 50: Bob Bills and Jason Straud each tallied 12 points as Morton (11-5, 5-2) prevailed in the West Suburban Gold.
Proviso E. 70, Hinsdale S. 52: Donte Parker’s 11 points paced five players in double figures for Proviso East (14-4, 6-0).
St. Charles 65, E. Aurora 44: Chris Young and Jason Harmon each scored 17 points as the Saints (13-4, 7-3) rolled to the Upstate Eight victory.
Oak Park 56, Glenbard West 54: Idris Osei-Agyeman had 18 points and 10 rebounds and Oak Park (13-5, 4-2) held on for the West Suburban Silver victory. Jon Brackmann had 12 points for Glenbard West.
Deerfield 68, Niles N. 65 (OT): Ryan Hogan scored 31 points to lead Deerfield (5-13, 3-4) to the Central Suburban North victory.
Benet 47, Carmel 44 (OT): Pat Fagan’s 12 points led Benet (11-7, 6-2) in the ESCC.
Evanston 56, Waukegan 44: Senyom Pompey’s 17 points paced Evanston (10-8, 3-4) in the CSL South.
Elmwood Park 57, Lemont 52: Dan Dudlek scored 17 points and Joel Herrera 15 for Elmwood Park (7-8, 3-4) in the Southwest Suburban.
Glenbard E. 79, W. Chicago 74 (2OT): Brian Hargreaves, whose three-point shot forced the first overtime, scored 25 points for Glenbard East (7-10, 2-5) in the Du Page Valley.
St. Patrick 63, Joliet Catholic 58: St. Patrick (12-7, 4-5) prevailed in the ESCC as Kevin Buford scored 15 points. Dan Phelan’s 24 was tops for Joliet Catholic.
Oswego 80, Batavia 75: Sean Madigan pumped in 24 points (six in overtime) and Ryan Ludwig added 21 as Oswego (13-5, 9-2) prevailed in the Little Seven. Ludwig hit two three-pointers in the final :33 of regulation, the second with :01 remaining to force overtime.
