New Trier knows it is far from winning the Central Suburban South basketball title. But the Trevians (10-8, 5-2) took a step in that direction Friday night with a 64-39 victory over Maine East (11-7, 4-3).

“It was the best game we played all season from start to finish,” said New Trier coach Mel Sheets. “We felt our size inside, if we were patient, could get the good percentage shot inside.”

Seth Derdzinski scored 19 points, Dan Carpenter 18 and Bart Leahy 12 for the Trevians.

“We knew they were small and we knew we could pound them on the boards,” said Carpenter. “We knew that if we would get an early lead, we’d be in control.”

Hersey 87, Fremd 72: Jake Olson’s 26 points led Hersey (14-2, 6-0) in the MSL North. Bill Dorner added 16 points.

Taft 37, Roosevelt 31: Kenyatta Nason’s 10 points led Taft in the Red North. Anthony Ajisedirl’s 16 points was high for Roosevelt.
