`Geronimo: An American Legend’ soundtrack (Columbia) (STAR)(STAR)(STAR)
Not many people will buy a ticket for a movie solely because they’re likely to hear a good soundtrack. But if the music credit belongs to Ry Cooder, audiences can be sure that an entertaining audio experience, at least, is assured. Cooder’s music balances mesmerizing Native-American rhythms with traditional American marches and dance tunes, much in the same way the movie’s director Walter Hill alternated points of view on the cavalry and Indians. Most strikingly, though, Cooder blends tribal chants and throat singing with such instruments as a euphonium, bouzouki, tombak and various flutes-even an I-beam-to evoke Native-American mysticism and torment; meanwhile, banjos, fiddles, mandolins and brass instruments declare the intentions and menacing drive of an expeditionary America.
