A natural gas main broke for the second time in about a week, once again closing part of a major east-west thoroughfare to traffic Monday night and Tuesday morning.

Extreme weather conditions caused the 12-inch main to break, said Jane Wiedmeyer of Northern Illinois Gas Co. Crews were called to Park Boulevard and Butterfield Road when somebody complained of a gas odor at 10:40 p.m. Monday.

An earlier leak was discovered along the same main on Jan. 18. Repairs on that break were completed Thursday.

Last week’s break was about 40 feet south of the most recent break, Wiedmeyer said.

On both occassions, crews closed Butterfield Road in both directions from Illinois Highway 53 to Lambert Road. Repairs were completed on the most recent break at about noon Tuesday, Wiedmeyer said.

No customers lost service during either break, Wiedmeyer said.
