An employee of a Joliet auto service shop was arrested at work Saturday and charged with assisting in a robbery at the shop last fall which left a co-worker dead.

Kenny W. Smith, 26, of 1856 Asbury Circle in Joliet was arrested at Jiffy Lube Oil, 1600 N. Larkin Ave., according to Joliet police Capt. James Grace. Smith was charged with first-degree murder, armed robbery and robbery in connection with the death of Douglas Petan, a 20-year-old Jiffy Lube employee, at the shop on Oct. 31.

Police believe Smith supplied inside information to two other men who were charged last week in connection with the crime.

The alleged gunman, Ivan Dockins, 24, of 500 S. Water St. in Joliet was charged Friday with murder, armed robbery and robbery, Grace said. Leo Williamson, 21, of 727 Elmer St. in Joliet, whom police believe drove the getaway car, was charged Wednesday with armed robbery, he said.

Petan, a part-time student who had worked at Jiffy Lube for three years, was in the lower level of the shop with two other employees when Dockins entered through an open bay door after hours, police said.

Although police refused to say if they believe Smith left the door open, Jiffy Lube officials said at the time that company policy requires all doors to be secured after closing.
