Downers Grove and Darien will pay about $900,000 to build a water pressure adjusting station that will serve portions of both municipalities, officials said Monday.

The pressure adjusting station will serve the southern section of Downers Grove and a northern portion of Darien. The two towns agreed to the project last year as a way to better serve residents and to accommodate a new shopping center near 75th Street and Fairmont Avenue. Without an additional pressure adjusting station, the shopping center might drain area water supplies in the event of a disaster, officials said.

Officials from both municipalities agreed to award the project to Guse Erickson Co., of Oakbrook Terrace. Erickson’s bid of $911,750 was the lowest of five submitted bids and lower than the project’s original estimated cost of $1 million, said Robert Jungwirth, senior director of engineering for Downers Grove.

The project is expected to be completed in June, said Downers Grove village manager Kurt Bressner.
