Deloris Axelrod, Highland Park, was disqualified in part because some people who circulated her nominating petitions do not live in the southeast Lake County district. The State Board of Elections made the ruling late last week.
As a result, Republican Edna Schade of Deerfield will have no primary opponent and will face Rep. Lauren Beth Gash (D-Highland Park) in the November general election. Gash is also running unopposed. Another Republican, former Highland Park City Council member Joyce O’Keefe, dropped out of the primary race in December as local party workers squabbled.
Schade, a former County Board member, is the choice of House Republican leader Lee Daniels of Elmhurst. The Daniels camp is relieved that there will be no primary race for the district, which includes parts of Buffalo Grove, Deerfield, Highland Park and Riverwoods.
Ousting Gash, a freshman, is a top priority for House Republicans. “We’re glad this is over, so we can move on now to winning the election,” said Dale Duda, a spokeswoman for Daniels.
