Want to make coach Darryl Sutter’s temper explode? Then talk about the Blackhawks’ “system” and how its defensive style is unique in the NHL.
“There’s way too much made about our system,” he said, taking away any excuse some of his players may desire.
“It’s the same kind of system 15 other teams have, only our forechecking may be different. This whole system thing is overplayed.”
In other words, you believe greater offensive production is possible from playing the Hawks’ system? That it’s a misconception for people and players to believe this defensive style precludes a dynamite offense from your present group?
“That’s right,” Sutter said. “We should be scoring more.”
So if it’s not the system, then the question many are asking becomes: Why don’t the Hawks have more skilled offensive players?

“It felt like the end of the world at first, but in the long run Jeff will consider it one of the best things to happen to him,” Russell said.
“It’s important to just play. He has a mind-set that he’s an NHL player because he came right here from juniors.
“But playing (with Indianapolis in the International League) will be a positive experience and help him be a better player when he comes back.”
