Sentencing was postponed Tuesday for a Mt. Prospect youth found guilty of murder in one of the first street gang slayings in the northwest suburbs.
The defendant, Dylan Metzel, 19, was convicted by a jury last Dec. 2 of the March 1992 shooting death of John Anzelmo, 17, a rival gang member, on Dee Road near Park Ridge.
Cook County Associate Judge Margaret O’Mara-Frossard set another hearing Feb. 23 after neither the prosecution nor the defense had received a court-ordered pre-sentencing report, as required by law. The report was delivered to the judge at Tuesday’s hearing in Skokie and given to the attorneys.
Frossard also gave defense attorney Kenneth Goldberg until the February date to support by affidavit or testimony a contention in a motion for a new trial that the jury came up with its verdict only minutes after deliberations were interrupted by a sheriff’s deputy who allegedly said they would be sequestered for the night if they didn’t have a verdict within 10 minutes.
The judge said she believed the deputy only told the jurors they could continue deliberations at a hotel, but that the jury already had reached its verdict.
Metzel, who testified he fired the gun in self-defense, faces 20 to 60 years in prison.
