Police said at least eight merchants in the area have reported counterfeit bills being passed at their establishments in the last six weeks.

The bills, mostly for $20-and, in one instance, a $100 note-escaped detection until bank officials called it to the attention of merchants. Investigators are aware of at least $300 that has been lost because of the counterfeit money, said Lisle Police Sgt. Steven Arp.

Thus far, investigators don’t have any suspects in the incidents.

“By the time the counterfeit bills were identified at the bank, it was too late” to trace their origin, said Arp.

Police believe the bills might also turn up in neighboring communities. Business people and residents should be wary of any currency that looks or feels unusual, with a strange texture or color, police warn.
