A key Kane County Board committee on Thursday rejected for the second time in as many weeks a Geneva-sponsored compromise plan for expanding Settler’s Hill Landfill.

Instead, the Executive Committee is forwarding a plan for the full board’s approval Tuesday that will allow the garbage dump to grow by another 5.5 million cubic air-yards with no definite closing date.

The recommended plan gives Waste Management, which operates the landfill under contract from the county, what it wanted in terms of being able to expand without a firm deadline for closing.

“We’re pretty disappointed in this action,” said Geneva Ald. Tim Vetang, who helped draft the city’s position.

On Thursday, Geneva officials told the Executive Committee they would drop opposition to the expansion plan if the city were awarded 5 percent of the gross landfill revenues beginning in the year 2007, with the rate increasing 1 percent each year that the dump remains open.

“We looked upon this as an incentive for them to close by 2007, rather than as a revenue source for us,” Vetang said.
