Illinois: Wrestler Steve Marianetti, an Illini junior from Glenbrook North High School, finished second in the 142-pound division of the prestigious Midlands tournament in Evanston.

Marianetti (14-1) lost the title match 7-5 in overtime to John Fisher of the Foxcatcher Wrestling Club.

Charles Gary, a junior from Thornwood High School, placed fourth at 150 pounds.

The two Illini were the highest-finishing collegians in their respective weight classes; the wrestlers who finished ahead of them have completed their collegiate eligibility and are wrestling for clubs.

Next up for Illinois is the Sooner Open at the University of Oklahoma on Saturday. The Illini return to Huff Hall on Jan. 14 to meet Northern Illinois.

Kris Dupps scored 41 points, the second-highest total in Illinois women’s basketball history, but the Illini still fell to Kent State 97-91 Sunday in the Portland (Maine) Shootout. Dupps, a junior from Heath, Ohio, also had eight rebounds.

The Illini rebounded to defeat Georgia State 73-50 Monday afternoon in the consolation game. Dupps poured in 22 more points to lead all scorers and added nine rebounds.

The Illini are 5-3 going into a brutal three-game home stretch against ranked teams. They open Big 10 Conference play against 1993 NCAA runner-up Ohio State at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in Huff Hall. Then the Illini play host to Alabama at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Penn State at noon Sunday.
