Wisconsin safety Scott Nelson had two things on his mind as the clock wound down Saturday in the Rose Bowl.
One thought had to do with figuring out a way to stop UCLA’s last-gasp rally deep in Badgers territory.
And the other?
“I was thinking, `We’d better win this thing or it’s going to screw up my plans.’ ” said Nelson a fifth-year senior.
Those plans involved pulling Nelson’s longtime girlfriend, Becky Kliefoth of Sun Prairie, Wis., out of the grandstand to propose marriage. But he was only going to go through with it if the Badgers won.
When the game ended with Wisconsin on top 21-16, a relieved Nelson scanned the stands until he found Kliefoth. A security guard escorted her to the field, where Nelson met her, knelt and popped the question.
