One man was killed and another critically injured Tuesday after an early-morning accident in which authorities said one of them swerved into opposing traffic.
Joseph Mlynarski, 20, of Wauconda was driving west on U.S. Highway 45 about 5:50 a.m., said Police Cmdr. Jerry Storer, when he swerved across the center line, sideswiped a pickup truck, then rammed head-on into a car.
The accident occurred about 250 feet west of Prairie Road, authorities said.
Mlynarski was flown by helicopter to Milwaukee County Medical Complex and transferred to nearby Froedtert Memorial Lutheran Hospital, where he was pronounced dead about noon, a spokesman there said.
Margarito Hernandez, 24, of Mundelein, the driver of the car that was hit head-on, was listed in critical condition late Tuesday afternoon at Milwaukee County Medical Complex.
The two occupants of the pickup, which ended up in a ditch, were not injured, authorities said.
Storer said the cause of the accident was being investigated.
