The city this week is expected to advertise for architects to submit proposals in a bid to renovate police department offices.
City administrator Ron Podschweit said a City Council committee overseeing the project wants to have an architect hired by January.
Although a need for additional jail cells, locker space and parking facilities was recognized more than three years ago, planning for the project has been postponed continually.

In October 1991, the city hired a consultant who developed preliminary plans for four options ranging in cost from $1.3 million to $1.7 million. The police department offices are in the northern first-floor area of the Batavia Government Center, 101 N. Island Ave.
The committee is studying a funding plan to ask voters to approve a bond referendum in 1994 after the project’s costs have been determined, Podschweit said.
