Larry McCray Delta Hurricane (Pointblank) (STAR)(STAR)(STAR) 1/2

Contemporary bluesman Larry McCray’s debut album, “Ambition,” was the highlight of the initial batch of releases by Virgin Records’ Pointblank subsidiary a couple of years ago. And his rocked-up blues guitar burns throughout on his worthy follow-up, “Delta Hurricane.” McCray is very much a ’90s bluesman, unafraid of mixing in rock, soul and even the occasional heavy-metal touch in his music. On “Adding Up” his guitar stings like a hornet, while riffing horns and classic Hammond organ temper his blazing fretwork on “Not That Much.” McCray’s vocal chops are every bit as impressive as his instrumental ones, dripping despair on “Hole in My Heart” while his guitar breathes fire. Grittier than Robert Cray and more “uptown” than Buddy Guy, McCray finds the perfect balance here.
