Those patrol officers talking to motorists in the village might look stern, but many of them will be bearing rewards for the safety-minded this holiday season.
As part of a program to increase voluntary compliance with state seat belt laws, village police officers will award safe-driving citations to motorists they see wearing seat belts or using child safety seats from Friday to Jan. 1. The citations entitle the recipient to a free ice cream sundae at a fast-food restaurant.
In its second year, the program has proven popular with motorists, said Police Lt. David Rechenmacher.
“We try to make it a positive contact with the Police Department, rewarding people for something good,” he said.
