Jeannie Tanner: Any Time Any Where (JNM).
Singer and multi-instrumentalist Jeannie Tanner roars with the confidence of a pop-music diva. Spunky and street-smart, she peddles somewhat pedestrian lyrics (most self-penned or co-written) of spurned love and sizzling romance, yet with stylistic maturity.
The Chicagoan’s acumen with brass instruments is evident in “Groove Me,” as mellow, Chuck Mangione-inspired trumpet lines saunter as if on a fluegelhorn. Tanner’s “rhythmic breathing” vocals lend a techno backdrop to that song, though the composition might have worked better without the dressing. The disc does suffer from sameness in Mike Kroell’s synthesizer programming. “Gonna Make It” and “Empty Paradise” straddle the line between contemporary jazz and rock.
