When a new Super Kmart was built this year, several residents objected to the store, which is near a junior high school, possibly being able to sell air guns.

In response to those concerns, village officials are mulling the idea of prohibiting the commercial sale of handgun-style air guns and also outlawing the commercial sale of all handguns.

“I don’t want handguns to be able to be sold in Elk Grove Village,” Trustee Ton Chernick said.

Under the proposed law, residents still could possess handguns or handgun-style air guns, but they would need to purchase the weapons elsewhere.

Some officials, though, argued that the proposed law would punish law-abiding citizens.

“Let me make this clear. I don’t own a handgun. I don’t want a handgun,” Trustee Craig Johnson said. “I still think we’re infringing on the rights of people when we take that away.”

In addition, village officials are considering raising the minimum age to 18 from 13 for those seeking to purchase BB or pellet guns, and making it illegal to possess and transport any type of air gun within reach of passengers in a vehicle.
