The city’s official seal will remain as it is-a close resemblance to that of the state-while aldermen take a closer look at the color scheme of a proposed redesign.

The City Council this week tabled the adoption of a new blue, green and gold emblem picturing an oak tree in front of a river and rolling hills.

“It seems the blue has a purple tint to it and isn’t quite Geneva blue,” said city administrator Phil Page. “People are generally receptive to the fact that we’re changing this.”

The new seal already has started appearing on some city stationery, Page said. It needs the council’s approval to be used on city documents and publications.

Scott McBain, a local artist, drew the oak tree design in 1976 for a city-sponsored contest to come up with a new city flag. No one thought to make the design “official” until Mayor William Ottilie suggested the idea earlier this year, Page said.

Geneva’s current emblem closely resembles the shield and ribbon-clutching bald eagle found on the Illinois State Seal.

No one really knows why or for how long Geneva used the eagle emblem, Page said.

“The oak with the river and hills is certainly more representative of what Geneva is all about,” said Page. “We don’t have any eagle living around here that I know of.”
