Mayor Arthur Schultz had his larynx removed Tuesday during three hours of cancer surgery that his office described as successful.
An aide said the 60-year-old mayor did not intend to resign and would eventually return to work, although it was unclear when. He was expected to remain hospitalized at St. Joseph Medical Center for a week to 10 days.
Schultz, a former Joliet police officer, was elected to a four-year term in spring 1991.
The operation was the second for Schultz in the last five months. In May, the mayor had part of a tumor removed from his vocal cords and underwent extensive radiation therapy.
Councilman Anthony Uremovic is presiding over City Council meetings in Schultz’s absence.
