The City Council’s Public Works Committee is recommending that St. Charles grant Belvidere Construction Co. a contract extension until the end of May, waiving the $1,000-a-day penalty for not completing the project by the contractual deadline.
The $2.4 million project was set back for six weeks in July and August when heavy summer rains caused a high water level in the Fox River, which prevented equipment and crews from laying the bridge’s foundation.
The proposed contract extension calls for the bridge to be substantially complete by mid-January and to be open for traffic by the end of May 1994.
The two-lane bridge, the downtown area’s third, will link Illinois Highway 31 on the west side of the river with Riverside Drive on the east.
