On April 27, Tempo reported on the unsolved hit-and-run death of Crystal June Melton, a young, mentally disabled woman from Charleston, Ill., who, with her outgoing boyfriend, Kevin James, made up the town’s favorite couple.

Neither police nor private detectives brought in by Crystal June’s mother, Mary, have been able to solve the mystery of who was driving the car that hit and killed her on March 12, 1992, though police have identified the car as one reported stolen by a local car dealer shortly after Crystal June was found. The car dealer’s son-in-law allegedly had left the car with the keys in it in the parking lot of a downtown tavern.

An attorney for Mary Melton recently filed a lawsuit, charging the son-in-law with negligence for not locking the car and for leaving the keys in it. No hearing date has been set, and, in the meantime, Mary Melton hopes for a break in the case.

“The police tell me they follow up on leads, but I don’t know what the leads are,” she said. “I even bought a police scanner so I can listen to it in hopes of hearing something. I just want to see an end to this.”
