Gunner’s Mate Seaman Apprentice Anthony Goins has been charged with premeditated murder in the death of Iris Stevens, of Waukegan, naval authorities said Thursday.
As the result of the charges, Goins, 24, faces an Article 32 hearing before a Navy lawyer, a procedure that Navy spokesman Ken Cronk described as similar to a grand jury proceeding in civilian courts. No hearing date has been set.
Goins, a native of Bluefield, Va., was arrested in San Diego last week and taken back to Great Lakes, where he is being held in the brig, Cronk said.
Stevens, 31, was found dead Sept. 26 in the Forrestal Village housing area on the base. The nude body apparently had been dragged through grass and mud and abandoned in a field, where it was discovered by North Chicago police. She had apparently been strangled elsewhere, authorities said.
