The sight of a home built next to the exact same model may be unpleasant, but not so much so that the city needs to adopt a new law prohibiting the practice.

That was the decision this week of the Batavia Plan Commission, which briefly considered, then rejected, the notion of an anti-monotony ordinance.

City engineer Ted Bergeson said commissioners decided that ordering developers not to repeat housing types on neighboring lots would be better handled through annexation agreements than through an ordinance.

“One of the problems is how to define monotony,” Bergeson said. “Once a neighborhood matures, and landscaping grows out and homeowners make various changes, no two homes really look alike.”
