Wheaton-Warrenville South 42, Fenton 19: Bobby Nelson played three quarters but compiled numbers most backs dream of for an entire game-234 yards on 18 carries and four touchdowns-as top-ranked Wheaton-Warrenville South began its Class 5A title defense.

Wheaton South (10-0) racked up 434 yards total offense and next has a second-round showdown with unbeaten Palatine.

“I knew that I’d have to kind of carry the load, since I’ve been here before,” Nelson said.

Rockford-Boylan 31, McHenry 28: Running back Rickey Grimes scampered in from 6 yards out on third down to give Rockford Boylan the overtime win. McHenry trailed 25-0 with 1:33 left in the third quarter when it mounted its comeback. Boylan quarterback Willie Young completed 6 of 12 passes for 114 yards.

Mather 14, Maine West 7: Catrell Colson threw for one touchdown and scored the game-winner on a 23-yard run as Mather (8-2) advanced to a second-round game with Lake Forest. Colson set up his go-ahead score by recovering a muffed punt.

“The kids hung in there all year,” Mather coach Ed Miller said. “We stuck together. Tonight, we had a lot of chances and finally got it done.”

Jim Somerville opened the scoring for Maine West (6-4), capping a 99-yard drive with a 1-yard run in the second quarter.

Colson, who hit Yarmo Green for the tying touchdown, finished with 100 yards on 18 carries.

De La Salle 20, Maine South 12: Maine South (8-2) jumped to a 12-0 second-quarter lead on a 1-yard touchdown run by Marty Dula and Jason Loerzel’s 25-yard fumble recovery. But Brian Sheard scored on a 1-yard sneak 38 seconds before halftime, and De La Salle (7-3) rode the momentum.

Sheard hit Robert Sepka with a 31-yard scoring strike in the third quarter and Joe Pastirik (85 yards, 15 carries) added a 40-yard burst with :56 play.

Bolingbrook 27, Joliet Catholic 25: Greg Williams ran 68 yards for his second touchdown of the day with 3:25 left to lift Bolingbrook (10-0) over Joliet Catholic (6-4).

Less than three minutes later, Joliet’s Mike Sopko was on the verge of turning a 47-yard screen pass into six points when Williams ran him down from behind.

“I go both ways (safety/quarterback) and I was pretty fatigued,” said Williams, who rushed for 180 yards on 20 carries and scored on runs of 25 and 68 yards. “My legs were still sore from the long touchdown run. But when I saw I was the last man, I had to dig down to my last breath. It was either suck it up or go home.”

After Williams tackled Sopko out of bounds at the Raider 31, Joliet Catholic drove to the 19. With :16 left, John Cerri barely missed on a 36-yard field-goal attempt.

Lake Forest 21, Highland Park 7: Ryan Lusk (113 yards, 12 carries) broke a 69-yard run in the third quarter, then hit Ben Moss on a 23-yard strike for a fourth-quarter TD for Lake Forest.

Michael Rhines (110 yards, 22 carries) gave Lake Forest the early lead, capping a 96-yard second-quarter drive with a 1-yard plunge. But Tory Watson (144 yards) broke a 72-yard TD to tie the game at 7-7.

Lake Forest’s ground game proved too tough, piling up 366 yards. Jason Klapper was the third back to break the century mark, gaining 118 yards on 19 carries.
